Show Young People-Good or Bad? Appearing on the front page of the July 12 issue of the Iron Gounty Record were two pictures, depicting the course of regular news events, that tell a very important story. A story that deals with the lives of young people, and perhaps gives the best possible illustration of why young people of our state are generally considered among the cleanest, most upright of the nation. One of the pictures we refer to showed police officers taking two young men to jail to await execution in payment pay-ment for a willful murder they admit committing. The other showed two boys, a few years younger, happily receiving recognition for outstanding performance of duty and study for which they receive Eagle Scout awards. . In the story of the murderers of a young man who was going about his business earning an honest living, is found a background of little guidance in their early life, a trail of hoodlumism that found them preying on others for whatever they wanted, and exhibiting a bravado in having "taken what they wanted" no matter what the cost. In the story of the two young scouts is found a background back-ground of cooperative effort between boys, their parents and their scout leaders, a story of reward for devotion to a good cause, reward for having properly applied themselves them-selves in an effort of achievement, and of having worked with their fellows instead of against them. Surely as long as we continue to give guidance to young people, to help direct them in the right direction and to understand their problems, few if any of them will become criminals, and their future will hold the happiness hap-piness of a useful life, instead of tragic endings in prison or before a firing squad. |
