Show Work for the Alumni 4 w WHILE a group of students were conversing recently concerning their plans for the summer vacation one one young man remarked that he would take a job on the city sewer if he could get it Inquiry proved that there are many students here who are working their own way almost entirely entirely entirely en en- and who have heretofore depended depended depended de de- almost upon the chance chance of getting gettin em employment t during the summer vacation These young men mena a are e willing to turn their hands to almost any kind of labor and nd most of them are fitted by experience for various employments but it is not at atall atall all likely that henceforth opportunities opportunities ties for earning fair wages will be anything like as numerous as they have been in the past The country is flooded with idle men In this territory there is not employment for half the laborers who have families to support so that it is not probable that there will be be many openings for those hose who desire employment for only a part of the year In view of these conditions it will not be surprising if many students do da donot donot not return next September to con continue their work and it is also likely that those who do not return will b be among the brightest and most successful students in the U University ni versi ty Such a condition would certainly be deplorable ble and should be avoided if possible It strikes us that without any injury to its dignity the Alumni Association might do something in this matter There ought to be some provision for aiding impecunious students who are are- sincere diligent and successful ID in their work At present there is no such provision there are no scholarships and outside of religious organizations we know of no single instance wherein where where- in aid has been given students in Utah We recognize the fact that many young men and women attend colleges who would be more profitably employed elsewhere and therefore would not advise aiding students indiscriminately indiscriminate indiscriminately Aid should be given only to those of proved ability and diligence to those those- who are likely to repay society for the the- help they receive There should be some organization that would interest itself in this matter that would take pains to search out those students worthy of and needing assistance and do its utmost to provide provide provide pro pro- vide such assistance We believe the the- Alumni could do this and do not doubt that they would receive a great deal of help from outside once the thing were started It i iS a question well worthy of their attention |
