Show A SUGGESTION TION of President Acting-President A Kingsbury in his last report to the Board of Regents is worthy of much thought and attention It was this that at least one of the Regents should be selected by the he Alumni from among their members The graduates of an institution are the ones to whom that institution must look for fidelity and support and this being the case it is highly fitting that they should have a voice voice in 1 its ts government In 1865 a statute was enacted providing that thereafter all the overseers of Harvard University should be elected by the Alumni It was urged in in opposition that the electors being comprised for forthe forthe forthe the most part of young men there was much danger of incompetents being elected But the results have shown that so far from from this being the case the average age of the the overseers is somewhat over fifty So reasoning by analogy there need be little fear that any incompetents would be elected to the Regency by the Alumni of this University sh should uld such a policy be adopted i iThen Then besides a Regent Regen t selected from the alumni would of course know more about the condition and needs of the University and would in all cases generally speaking be able to give better advice an and formulate better poli poli- cies He would be in vital touch with the best interests of the University and necessarily have better ideas concerning its government And moreover should the time ever come when the interests of the community should be pushed aside for those of selfish poli political rulers a board of Regents composed of loyal Alumni would form a necessary and salutary restraint against every form of corruption if it should be desired to use the University as a means of reaching reaching reaching reach reach- ing some low and unworthy end The organic law of the territory would have to be changed in or order er to adopt this provision and it is not inopportune time to present this question question question ques ques- tion to the candid consideration of an enlightened and progressive public p |
