Show WE wish to say a word i in n regard to the scientific c apparatus of which this University is about to become owner through the generous gift of the Salt Lake Literary and Scientific Association Association Asso Asso- we would like to see it so placed that the greatest possible benefit may be obtained from it In scientific study in the university of today textbook textbook text text- book hook is being replaced more and more by experimental work We have in mind one of the newer and larger universities where text-books text are area area a rarity except as books of reference and lectures and oral instruction are given only to guide a student in his laboratory work or or to enlarge upon the facts that he lie has determined for himself by experiment In Physics for instance a students student's first lesson is to learn to use and care for delicate balances and instruments of measurement after this he takes up other apparatus one piece S after another with each of which he is required to make accurate determination of such substances as may be given Y him and moreover he must depend upon his own work and frequently use his own results over again agai in other deter deter- The same system holds true more or less of all the other sciences Pk We mention this as merely one instance in one ne of the many universities t N Now ow that such a lot of valuable f apparatus is about to fall into our hands let us hope that it will be put into profitable use l-e and not be kept locked up in glass cases to be shown to admiring visitors and rarely if ever bused used |
