Show WHEN we review the history of the University for the past two years we cannot but feel proud of the progress it has made Perhaps it would not be putting it too strong to say that most of that progress has been due to the broad and liberal policy pursued by the faculty during that time The result of that policy is one of the best possible proofs that so far at least as colleges are concerned that government government government govern govern- ment is best which governs least Whatever may be the facilities po- po by an institution of learning its progress must ultimately be worked out by the students themselves This seems so obvious as to appear almost trite yet it is a truth that is seldom realized in the fullest sense many educators being still imbued with the idea that learned professors and a fine array of apparatus us combined with the strictest discipline are bound to work wonders It takes a long time even after truths are discovered to get them universally acknowledged and no where are more tenacious of life than in educational institutions If there are any places in this age of innovation where the dust of antique time still remains it is in some of the oldest colleges and universities both in Europe and in America Some of those in the old world are perhaps centuries behind the civilization of our day and some in our own country are certainly not marching in the vanguard of pro pro- gress Among the many disadvantages under which a new institution like ours must labor is this advantage that they can if they will steer clear of that conventionality conventionality conventionality conven conven- which is the curse of of many institutions of longer standing They can make selection of all that is best in inthe inthe inthe the old universities without hampering s. s themselves with ideas that have survived from the dark ages or imposing musty and worn-out worn traditions upon their students This wise course has in our opinion been followed by o our our r faculty during the time that Acting President Kingsbury has been at the head of ofU U University affairs and there is scarcely room for a doubt that his minded broad-minded liberal and eminently successful policy will be adopted by our President and faculty next year and thereafter |
