Show I r THE eee SOCIETIES AT a meeting of the collegiate students students stu stu- dents held last week to elect debaters appoint committees and make other necessary arrangements for the intercollegiate intercollegiate intercollegiate inter col debate with the University of Colorado everything passed off as smoothly as the most sanguine could expect Several professors were present and addressed the students the gist of their remarks being that the students should throw aside all feelings of favoritism favoritism favoritism favori favori- that they might have and vote for forthe forthe forthe the men whom in their best opinion would most worthily represent the U Uni Uni- ni- ni A report from Mr Roylance chairman of the arrangement committee appointed by the Delta Phi to treat with other societies and with their consent to work up the debate independently of any society was received After some little discussion as to the best means of choosing debaters a a was adopted to the effect that five students representing the University and not the societies be chosen that the names of these five be submitted to a committee of the faculty consisting of the Professor sor of Political Economy the Professor of Logic and the Professor of English and that this committee be given the power to select from these five the three to represent the University in the intercollegiate intercollegiate intercollegiate inter inter- collegiate contest Nominations were made the five students voted in on a single ballot Mr W. W D. D Riter was elected business manager with power to appoint sub-committees sub as he saw fit and the meeting adjourned The committee of the faculty reported two days later that they had chosen as the Utah U University ni versi ty representatives Mr W. W G. G Roylance Mr F. F W W. Reynolds and Mr L. L E. E Young THE audience which greeted Dr Utter last Friday evening proved that the library lecture course is still popular popular popular lar in spite of the fact that the lectures are becoming less interesting than formerly Those who had heard Dr Utter before and knew of his ability felt sure that he would redeem the course from degeneration but the event proved that like some pevious speakers he had arranged his lecture for school children children children chil chil- dren so that it was almost barren of the de deep p philosophical thought which nearly always characterizes Dr Utters Utter's discourses Of course we are very grateful to th these se gentlemen who generously generously generously gener gener- donate their time and thought for our instruction and but at atthe atthe atthe the same time and without offense we would suggest that college students have dry facts for their daily and that for them a lecture to he be effective and interesting must not only contain food for thought but must be he full of suggestion Each lecture ought to be a amore amore amore more or less complete generalization with the supposition that the audience is is is' already acquainted with the most of the facts If they are not it will be their fault and not the lecturers We hope that future lecturers will profit by this suggestion k LIEUTENANT WRIGHT took for the subject subject subject sub sub- of his lecture last Wednesday The Second Bull Run Antietam and Fred- Fred ericksburg After the Peninsula campaign campaign campaign cam cam- Lee invaded Maryland The TheU U Union mon troops scattered between Fredericksburg Fredericksburg Fred- Fred ericksburg and Harpers Harper's Ferry were under the command of General Pope i but afterwards the forces known as the Army of Virginia were consolidated with the army of the Potomic and General McClellan put in charge Lee passed up the right bank of the Potomac Potomac Potomac Poto Poto- mac and with the aid of Jackson was creating great consternation the latter General having captured Harpers Harper's Ferry taking about twelve thousand prisoners McClellan was following in inthe inthe inthe the rear of the Confederate army and was Vas so fortunate as to find out from a paper dropped by one of Lees Lee's officers just how the Confederates intended to carry carryon on the campaign The plan of the Southern general was now thwarted and on the of September 1862 the two armies met at Antietam and fought one of the bloodiest battles of the war The loss on both sides was enormous Seeing his scheme hopelessly frustrated Lee quietly fell back int into Virginia The Lieutenant holds that this campaign campaign campaign cam cam- on the part of the Union forces was a partial failure due to the o over over- er- er cautiousness and slowness of McClellan He Be was too prudent and too much absorbed absorbed ab ab- in preliminaries to lead the Federals Federal to victory General Burnside succeeded to the command of the northern army and immediately attacked Lee at Here a terrible battle was fought but the position of the Confederates was too strong and Burnside was compelled to withdraw The lecturer completed his remarks with a description of the war in the West describing in detail the battle of M borough DR MONTGOMERY lERY delivered an interesting interesting interesting interest interest- ing lecture before the students of the Church U University ty la last t Friday evening The subject was The Black Hills of South Dakota their Mines and Mineral Resources The lect lecturer first gave an account of his travels in that region and the difficulty that the people had of opening up the country The hills are called Black Hills on account of their dark appearance the color being due to the foliage of the trees The geological geological geological geo geo- logical formation was in detail detail detail de de- tail Crystal Cave being one of the natural natural natural nat nat- ural curiosities of that part of the country The cave is three hundred feet d deep ep and about twenty by hy thirty feet fee a at f the mo mouth th It is lined by sparkling crystals o of of presenting a beautiful ful appearance It was at Deadwood the largest city of the n neighborhood f that the body of Wild Bill J was found The doctor closed his remarks remarks remarks re re- marks with a description of the Amalgam process of extracting gold and silver i from the ores The lecture was illustrated illustrated illus illus- f throughout with beautiful stereopticon stereopticon stere- stere views t n f THE Mathematical Society will meet in the the theArt Art Room next Friday at 7 30 p. p m. m Following is the 1st Piano Solo E.
