Show Cedar High School Probable Favorites For Basketball Title With most of their practice games behind them the high school basketball bas-ketball teams of the Dixie Division are anxiously awaiting the opening of the league race next week end. Each of the seven teams in the division will be pointing for a berth in the State High School Tournament Tourna-ment to be held in Salt Lake City early in March, and showings made in practice games during the past month indicate that at least five of the seven will be very much in the race. The Cedar high school Redmen team has been defeated only once in practice contests, and Hurricane Hurri-cane has lost only one game, while Kanab and Enterprise have loot two and Dixie has lost three, two of them against tough Region 2 teams. Thus it would seem that either of these five might win Division Di-vision honors. Parowan and Valley high at Orderville, while winning most of their games, have not bee:i quite so impressive as the others, but they cannot be completely counted out. At least they might upset some of the favorites with a a few "giant killing" acts. In fact, Parowan has been Improving rapidly rap-idly recently and may be the surprise sur-prise team of the division. The Redmen will probably be made favorites at the beginning of the season, and the Typhoons of Hurricane will be rated as the team most likely to stop the Cedar team's drive toward a tournament berth. The Typhoons will be especially hard to stop on their home floor. That "home floor" problem might be a terrific obstacle for the Redmen in two or three other games, particularly par-ticularly at Kanab, Enterprise and Dixie. Coach Lee Hafen's teams are always tough, especially on their home floor, and the Flyers of this season will be no exception. The- Kanab team is going to be hard to stop in their hill top gym or any other gym, and Cedar City players will also be remembering the work of the Enterprise crew last year. Definitely the underdogs, the Enterprise team tipped the Redmen In the next to the last game of the season a defeat that cost the Cedar Ce-dar squad at least a tie in the division. di-vision. The Enterprise team seems to be very strong this year and will undoubtedly cause plenty of trouble. Coach Floyd Slater has a very promising team at the Cedar City high which Is Justly rated among the leaders of the division, and if the Redmen do not get overconfident overconfi-dent it will be very hard to keep them out of the saddle. Overconfi-dence Overconfi-dence almost cost this bunch of athletes division football honors, but it is to be hoped that they learned their lesson when the Hurricane Hur-ricane Typhons tipped them in an important football game, and that they realize that they must be at their best In every game to win the division title and a berth in the state tournament. The league schedule will open Friday, January 9th. with three games to be played, two of them of utmost importance. In these two games Kanab will play at Hurricane Hur-ricane and Dixie will tangle with the Redmen at Cedar City. Cedar and Hurricane will be favored to win, but either or both may be knocked from their positions as favorites. In the other game Valley will play at Enterprise with Enterprise Enter-prise definitely the favorite. Two games will be played Saturday, Satur-day, January 10th., Valley meeting Dixie at St. George, and Parowan tangling with the Cowboys at Kanab. |
