Show Mesa - Snow Opening Game May Decide Conference Title When the Mesa Mavericks and the Snow Badgers meet at Grand Junction in one of the opening basketball games of the season on January 9th., the Intermountain Junior College Conference championship cham-pionship may be decided then and there. However, there are at leaot two other teams in the conference that will not be willing to concede the championship to the winner of that game. The Weber Wildcats and the Farmers of B. A. C. think thc:y will have something to say about the title, and they probably will. Tlie Badgers, last year's champions, cham-pions, and the Mavericks have been made favorites In the conference race, but the Farmers and the Wild-! Wild-! cats are showing much promise although al-though both teams are more or less unproved. The Dixie Flyers might have been considered as a possible contender but for a one-sided defeat de-feat handed them by Mesa in a practice game recently. The opening game of the season for Coach Ty Tydings' Farmers should be one of the most Interesting Interest-ing of the year because it pits them against the Dixie Flyers, their traditional tra-ditional and bitterest rivals. The game will be played in the B. A. C. gymnasium on Friday, January 9th. In another opening night game tha Weber Wildcats will tangle with the Eagles of Carbon at Price. On Saturday, Sa-turday, January 10th., Weber will play Mesa at Grand Junction, and Snow will play Carbon at Price, with the Weber-Mesa game probably Just as important as the Sncrw-Mesa game the night before. Local fans are anxiously awaiting the opening of the .conference race, and while they are enthusiastic about the propects of the Farmers this year, they are not so thrilled about the schedule. The B. A. C. team plays 12 games during the season, a home and home arrangement arrange-ment with each of the six other teams in the conference, which :s a good arrangement except that ill of the six home games will be played play-ed In January, and the last six games of the schedule will be played play-ed away from home. After opening with Dixie on January Jan-uary 9th. the Farmers will meet Carbon, January 16; Westminster, January 17; Snow, January 23; Mesa, January 30; and Weber January Jan-uary 31, all at Cedar City. On February Fe-bruary 6th. the Farmers start their away from home schedule, meeting meet-ing Dixie at 6t. George. On February Febru-ary 13th. they will play at Carbon, on February 14th. at Mesa, February 21st at Snow, February 27th. at Weber, and end the season at Westminster West-minster on February 28th. M. |
