Show U.S. Army Officers Investigate Sites Offered For hospital A delegation of six United States Army officers, headed by Lieutenant Lieuten-ant Colonel Walter M. Crandall of the army medical corps, and including in-cluding Colonel Elmer G. Thomas, area director of the army corps of engineers; Major J. H. Dawson and Captain W. D. Greenlee of Uvj Ninth corps area headquarters; William Wil-liam D. Jordan, engineer under Colonel Thomas, and William P. dtephens, army real estate pro-,ects pro-,ects munager, spent several hours m Cedar City Monday investigating investigat-ing sites to be given consideration for a proposed inland army hospital to be built in the near future. Several Sev-eral local officials, including Mayo, ri. H. Lunt, Warren H. Bulloch, chairman of the Iron County board of commissioners; D. C. Dlx, president pre-sident of the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce, J. Dean Fisher, president pre-sident of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, conducted the army group on a tour of three possible iitea in this vicinity. The sites were offered by the city free of cost to the government, the city offering to extend water, power pow-er and sewage facilities to any one of them. Of the three locations, the one receiving the most favorable consideration by the visiting group was that piece of land lying south of 2nd. South street, between highway high-way 91 and the foothills east of town. This location comprises approximately ap-proximately 600 acres of level undulating un-dulating land. Following the tour, the party spent some time closeted with local lo-cal officials at which time the officers of-ficers asked detailed questions con cerning transportation, distances from Important cities on the Pacific Coast, water, power and sewage facilities, fa-cilities, amount and location of coal for heating purposes, food supplies, population, climate, health conditions, condi-tions, condition of soil, drainage, and many other factors far too numerous to list. Specialists in eacn field were called in to answer all questions fully, with the result that the investigating committee was able to assemble an unusual amount of pertinent data for submission to Washington, D. C. The officers refused to make any definite committment, explaining that the group must makes its recommendations re-commendations to the War Department Depart-ment in Washington, D. C, and it is from there the decision on the site will come. They did, however,! assure local officials that Cedar City would be given "favorable consider ation" with other sites Inspected o the group. The proposed hospital will be of at least 1,000 bed capacity, with an i addltonal 500 beds being given ser- i ious consideration at the present and the possibility of the total bclnj raised to 3,000 eventually. An esti-' mated 300 permanent employe s1 will be required to run the establishment estab-lishment after its completion, which will be rushed as soon as the site has been decided upon. Definite word is expected to be received from Washington as to the site finally chosen early next week, inasmuch as the investigating investigat-ing committee's recommendations were due there on Saturday of this week. |
