Show NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS WHAT if the flesh is weak and mortals often fail to realize their ambitions and high resolves re-solves is this any reason why we should cease to make resolutions the keeping of which would raise us unto a higher plane of moral, social, religious and civic life? Were we to cease trying, how much progress in these and other desirable improvements would we make? And can we try intelligently and consistently without first making up our minds to do so? But New Year resolutions, you say. Those prompted by the exhuberence of spirit generated by the festive occasion, and so soon forgotten and disregarded. dis-regarded. Yes, even New Year resolutions made under un-der these conditions are better than no good resolves at all. For out of the many, even though they be lightly given, some will take root in deep and productive produc-tive soil and bring forth fruits. Therefore, at the beginning be-ginning of the New Year it is good that we should take an inventory of our mistakes and successes of the past 1 2 months and ascertain wherein we can improve during the present year of 1920. Each person is the best critic of his or her own private life. We know our own weaknesses best, even though we may be slow to admit them to others. oth-ers. No one is more competent to prescribe reforms or improvements in one's life as that person. As a community betterment, we offer a few suggestive resolutions as follows : Resolved, that I will lay aside all my private differences dif-ferences which tend to draw asunder, and unite my efforts with those of every other loyal citizen for the alvancement of the interests of the community and section in which I live. Resolved, that I will concentrate my efforts on climbing the legitimate ladder of success, and not attempt to rise by the destruction of the plans and hopes of some weaker neighbor. Resolved, that I will be 100 per cent loyal to my town and county, and give a reasonable share of my time and means for their advancement, realizing that which benefits the community at large benefits, not only me. but also my posterity after me. I Resolved, to speak well of everyone, whether before be-fore his face or behind his back. For the back-biter is an abomination in the land, and does far more injury in-jury to himself than to his intended victims. Resolved, to support and encourage every legitimate legit-imate and necessary enterprise started in the community, com-munity, realizing that money spent at home continues contin-ues to circulate among us, building up the business of the community and may return to me again. Resolved, to support all the various departments-of departments-of government and pursue a constructive policy in all civic affairs, rather than an obstructive or reactionary reaction-ary couse. ary course. Resolved to have all the legitimate fun and enjoyment en-joyment I can, keehing alive the social side of my existence, without undue prodigality or injury to any other person. Amen. |
