Show M AROUT THE BONDS ! 5l' noe cons''ra")'0 difference of opinion on ' M the fetftflftkM of bonding for so many differ-; B ent purposes and in such a large aggregate amount 1 as is proposed by the various boards and adrnin- m iatrative bodies. There is a feeling quite gener- 1 ally shared among the people that we are rushing B into debt too rapidly for our good, and that it is BB necessary to call a halt somewhere, or our taxes HH will become so high that they cannot be endured. J H First, there is the school district, which pro- H poses an additional bond issue of one hundred toi 1 one hundred ten thousand dollars, for the purpose: H of paying off an existing deficit of nearly thirty H thousand dollars and providing for additional H school facilities at Cedar City, Parowan and Par- H agonah. We are told that all the proposed build-, I ings are very necessary, and of course school re-' quirementa nearly always have the right of way H over anything else. H Next comes the County with a proposition to H bond in the sum of $100,000, for the purpose of H road and highway improvements. No one can1 H gainsay the fact that good roads are as important' H a anything we can mention in a country such as H ours, and besides it is argued that by the expen- H diture of this amount of county money funds to J H approximately three times this amount can be H obtained from the federal government and the! H state H Next in line is the City, with a proposed bond H issue of not less than $20,000 for the improvement H of the water system, the replacing of all leaky H pipe, the increase of the supply of water, and the H construction of a separate main for the purpose H of supplying water to the higher residental por- H tions in the south end of town. If any one doubts H the need for this improvement, ask some of those H citizens who have been paying water rates for the H past ten years and often have to carry their cul- H inary water from the canal for days at a time. H Of course, some of them threaten to thwart H the intention of the city council to force the water H upon them and vote down the bond issue if they H are not permitted to furnish the engineering plans H for the system, but we cannot take these very H seriously. The majority of them want the water Hi and are quite willing to leave the details to the L city's engineer and the utilities commission. H But with all these projected bond issues and W with the State bonding for $5,000,000 more for W roads, and with taxes almost at the straining point H now, people are beginning to ask "Where are we H going to get off at." H All these projects are necessary and it seems H as if they ought to carry; but we hear ominous H whispers and mutterings which causes us to won- H der if they can all be put over. |
