Show H WE AWAIT THEIR ANSWER. SOUTHERN UTAH in general nnd Cedar City in particular is awaiting with interest the H reply of State Engineer Beers to a letter recently H mailed by the citizens' committee appointed to investigate and negotiate further in relation to the proposed branch of railroad from Lund to Ce-Hfew Ce-Hfew dar City. The purport of the letter ?ent by the HvV committee to Mr. Beers was that from the assur-H assur-H yX nce given by the towns of southern Utah, so far H -taSw US heard from' we felt 8afe in Promising that the H people would contribute the ties for the road, T.- f providing the Salt Lake Route and the State Road Commission would perform their part of the com- pact to grade the road and furnish the rails and rolling stock. A conference was also suggested . by the committee either at this place or Salt Lake City for the purpose of working out the details of the undertaking, and ariving at a satisfactory un- derstanding in relation to values of the various properties to be furnished, the formation of the proposed company, etc. At this writing no ans- wer has been received to the committee's note, j From the hurried canvass made it was evident that the people of this entire section are deeply - interested in the question of better transportation facilities, and would welcome and assist the build- ing of a branch of rail road that would cut off even thirty miles of the uncertain and tedious wagon haul that stands between them and the markets and pleasures of the outside world. B 'rne aate nna keen increasing each year its L. mileage of state highways, and the maintenance BJv of a11 tnis grade is the problem that now confronts Pr the state road commission, and which has assumed mr serious proportions. It is evidently the conclusion g of the state engineer and other members of the H commission that if they can secure the laying of H ties and rails orf a portion of this grade where it 1 will serve a large area of country, and besides re- lieving the state of the burden of maintaining it, B. s at the same time better serve the needs of the M residents, it will be a wise move. An opinion that 1 is evidently entertained by the people of this lo-1. lo-1. cality as well. j Now that the people have had a prospect of the r realization of their dreams of the past thirty or H forty years, they are na'turally impatient at any K further delay, and are waiting anxiously for the m next move in the program for the construction of K. the proposed road. - We certainly trust that there will be no fur- B; ther delay, but that the people may realize their m' long cherished desirs, in the very near future. |
