Ono of tho mensures beforo congress that seems likely to bo adopted is tho bill for tho establishment estab-lishment of a national park service, Introduced by Representative Kent. It provides that tho servlco shall bo a part of tho department of tho lntorlor and under tho chargo of a director appointed ap-pointed by tho secretary, and that this director shall havo tho supervision, managoment nnd control of tho sover-al sover-al nntlonal parks, national monuments, tho Hot Springs reservation in Arkansas, Arkan-sas, and such parks, monuments and reservations as shall bo established in tho future. That tho bill Is In tho naturo of a conservation measuro Is shown by a section which authorizes tho secretary of tho Intorfor to sell or disposo of timber In cases whero tho cutting of timber is requisite for controlling attacks at-tacks of Insects or disease or for conserving con-serving tho scenery; aud that privileges, priv-ileges, leases and permits shall bo granted only for tho accommodation1 of tho public, and that no action shal) bo "detrimental to tho fundamental obj Ject of these aforesaid parks, monuments monu-ments and reservations, which object is to conscrvo tho scenery and tho natural and historic objects therein and to provido for tho enjoyment of said scenory and objects by the public In any manner and by any moans that will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment en-joyment of tuturo generations." |
