Show JUST take a careful survey of the portions of Main street which were surfaced with that splendid splen-did natural gravel concrete last winter, compare the condition of the street this year with what it was last ; then ask yourself if we ever expended labor to better advantage on improvements in this community. We believe it will be an inspiration inspira-tion for the extension of the work next winter just as far as possible in every direction. There Is nothing that tends to create a better impression of a town than nice smooth streets. And by the way, those abrupt, sharp crossings which connect the walks on opposite sides of the streets at many places are the measliest kind of small town practice, prac-tice, and should have no place nor countenance in the "foremost city of the south." Every time a stranger rides over one of these bumps in his car it means a curse, either audible or mental, against the backwoods practice that permits them. No city of much consequence has them. Some say that they are a protection against speeding. All humbug. We have city ordinances to regulate fast driving and officers to enforce them. A few arrests and punishments will control the speeding practice, if it becomes a nuisance. m |
