There is a rellnblo account given of an Englishman, Squire Oshald-stone, Oshald-stone, having ridden, In 1831, 200 miles In ten hours. In doing this, however, he rode 10 horses and changed every four miles. A wonderful test of endurance en-durance and pluck was the case of Capt. Charles Townloy, another English Eng-lish cavalryman, who, In 1810, rode with dispatches from Belgrade to Constantinople, Con-stantinople, 820 miles. lie remained In the saddle five days and 11 hours without rest, except on one occasion for six hours and the time consumed In changing to fresh horses. Twice the horse he rode dropped under him from exhaustion. It was a historic ride, for upon tho event of his arriving In Constantinople ahead of all other couriers hung tho decision of the war, which by his accomplishing the feat was averted. |
