Show i Government Attack on the Press, j Limerick, Feb. 2. With reference to the case of Mr. Buckley, B. L., pro- , prietor of the Limerick Leader, whose , sentence Judge Adams reduced on appeal, ap-peal, it is now known that Judge Adams'- order was forwarded by the ' clerk of the crown to the petty ses- sions clerk. The petty sessions clerk ' drew up a warrant for signature by the coercion act court. Major Hick- ( son, R. M. Limerick, and Mr. Brady, ' R. M., Ennis. Mr. Hickson signed but ' Mr. Brady refused to sign, alleging ' that Judge Adams had no legal power ' to interfere with the rule of bail. ( The authority of Dublin Castle was invoked. The law officers of the crown held that the order and warrant were ' perfectly right. The lord lieutenant ordered Mr. Brady to sign the warrant. Mr. Brady obeyed. The case was not in any form before Judge Adams since he made the original order. Limerick, Monday night. Mr. Buck- ley arrived from Dublin at 1:15 on i Monday, and about 5 o'clock went to William street police barrack, accompanied accom-panied by Mr. John Guinane, J. P.; Messrs. Morgan and Edward Duggan, his brother-in-law, and Mr. James ' Guinane of the Limerick Leader. Head Constable Moore formally executed the warrant and took charge of Mr. Buckley. Buck-ley. The party then proceeded to the prison, there being no public demonstration demon-stration by Mr. Buckley's express wish, and the usual formalities having been observed, the latest victim of the raid on the Irish press was duly interned. |
