In the constitution of the United States alone, and in those what are modeled ; after it is embodied the invention of j constitutional limitations in favor of religious freedom that tie the hands of supreme political power. It was the personality of Washington, urging religious re-ligious freedom for all, that began the patriotic relationship between Catholics Catho-lics and the republic. Religious toleration, tolera-tion, representative government, and the new federalism embodied in the constitution were the three dominant political ideas which control the re-! re-! public, and which owe much of their life and strength to the statesmanship statesman-ship of Washington. March 3, the twenty-fifth anniversary of the coronation of Pope Leo XIII, was commemorated at the university j by solemn mass and sermon, and in the afternoon by an academic gathering, at which addresses commemorative of dif- i ferent features of Pope Leo's career ! were delivered by the professors of the university. The ceremony of the day j manifested in a marked degree -ie joy of the university at the silver jubilee of Pope Leo's pontificate. |
