Show Bishop Montgomery Exalted. ' A TELEGRAM from Rome to the Associated As-sociated Press, of date Sept. 1, announces an-nounces that after a lengthy sitting on that day, the Propaganda decided to recommend to the pope the appointment appoint-ment of Rt. George Montgomery, thus signally honortd, is a young man who won his high position in the church by prudence, zeal and sqholaiiy ability. After his ordination he was selected by. Archbishop Alemany as his private secretary. During his term of office, he endeared himself to the Catholics of San Francisco and won the esteem and respect of the clergy of the archdiocese. arch-diocese. , When Archbishop Riordan I assumed charge of the archdiocese, the future bishop of Monterey and Los Angeles was chosen to fill the onerous position of chancellor. During his successful suc-cessful administration of the chancellorship, chancel-lorship, his prudence marked him as a worthy candidate for the mitre. In April, 1S94, he was consecrated bishop of Timui and coadjutor of Rt. Rev. Francis Mora, then bishop of Monterey and Los Angeles. In May, 1896, he succeeded Bishop Mora.
