Show GREAT CATUOLSC ' EVENT fC BUTTE Laying Corner Stone of Sacred Heart Church Bishop Keane of Cheyenne Officiated and Preached. A great event in the history of the Catholic church of Butte, and one that will be long remembered with pride and satisfactio-n by the members of Sacred Heart parish was the ceremony ; Sunday attendant upon the laying of j the corner stone of the beautiful church I 1 A isi lij M il i i I I j edifice that is being erected on East 1 Park street. i The upper portion of the structure is well under roof and much of the elegant ele-gant and elaborate stone work for the frorrt is in place. In prominent positions posi-tions on th top of the building the American Hag and the riag of the Emerald Em-erald Isle were displayed yesterday. The work upon the building is being I pushed with the utmost speed and it is expected thatit will be ready for the holding of services about Dec. L It is confidently predicted that it will be one of the finest, if not the finest, ap- pearing of the churches of the state, j The architecture is most effective, and there will be every convenience for both the people and clergy in that 1 splendid house of worship. The church j will provide comfortable seating capacity ca-pacity for 1.000 worshipers. j A magnificent organ has been donat- j ed to the new church and four large and beautiful altars. The parish was instituted two years ago last April by I Rev. Father J. J. Callahan, and under I the able and zealous pastorate of that popular clergyman the affairs of the J parish have prospei ed most remarkably, remark-ably, culminating in the erection of 1 great and beautiful church structure, the corner stone of which was laid with imposing ceremony Sunday. 1 It had been the expectation of the I pastor and his people that the head of this diocese. Bishop Brondel, would officiate of-ficiate at the corner stone laying, but h : was unavoidably absent and Bishop J. J. Keane of Cheyenne, the head of the cnurch in Wyoming, officiated yesterday yes-terday at the special request of Bishop Brondel. The eminent visiting bishop pro- ! duced a very fine impression upon the j great audience in attendance at the j services and also upon those who were j privileged to meet him personally. It 1 was his first visit to Butte and he ex- ! pressed himself as being most favor- j ably impressed with the remarkable energy and enterprise of the greatest mining camp on earth, and especially of t he members of the Sacred Heart par-, ish in securing so costly and elegant a house of worship in so brief a time after the institution of the parish. The spacious basement of the churcn, v here services are being held temporarily, tempor-arily, was filled to overflowing with worshipers at solemn high mass, celebrated cele-brated at 11 o'clock Sunday morning. A sermon appropriate to the corner stone laying was delivered by Bishop Keane. Seldom in Butte has a great congregation been privileged to hear so earnest and eloquent a plea in behalf SACRED HEARTCHURCH, BUTTE. of religion. In part the speaker said: "I am very happy to have the privilege privi-lege of representing in the ceremonies of this day your venerable and universally univer-sally esteemed bishop.. It is a source of pleasure to every good Catholic to witness wit-ness the growth of religion and the I erection of a great and beautiful temple j for the worship of God. It is a splendid structure, where Christ can dwell for the blessing of man. "But there is another temple that Christ more loves, the temple of the j soul. He more loved the soul of the most miserable little, beggar than the glorious temple of Solomon. His so- j licitude is chiefly for the upbuilding of i our lives and of our souls. We know j where is to be placed the cornerstone of this temple of God, but it is of still more importance to know what is the foundation of a Christian character. "The true life is the life of self-denial. It is the carrying of the cross every day and every hour. In the order of nature we must have the withered leaves of the fall and winter before there can come to us the beautiful awakening of nature in the spring- time. There is no building up of character char-acter without self-denial; the taking up of the cross daily and following Christ. "The benefactors of the human race have been the saints of God. Selfishness stands as a wall between a man and his neighbor. The world did not know-true know-true charity till Christ came on earth. Love impersonated in the incarnate God came to the world in the blessed person of Christ. The grand triumph of Christ was in his death by which he drew the whole world to him. You, my beloved, are the witnesses of the triumph of our Lord, as you gather at the altar and behold the erection of this splendid temple in his name. I "It is a glorious privilege to contribute contri-bute to the building of a temple like : i this for God. It is a great honor and j J will always be a source of pleasure and 1 ; satisfaction to each of you to realize : I that you have helped to place one stone I or one piece of timber in this sacred i edifice. Christ has a presence here thai ; is real. "'hrist lives for you, not in far off ' Jerusalem, but in this church. You ; have done a r V.s work that will in- j sure for you Co. 3 richest blessing. I j w-ould encourage ; you to continue in j your generous support of the church ; and esneciallv tr lie sure that von con- ! stantly strive to upbuild the temple of your faith." At the high mass Father Giacalone officiated as deacon; Father Callahan. sub-dtacon; Father Van Aiken of Saint Joseph's and Father Batens of Saint Lawrence, chanters. The music by the choir was very fine. The playing of Waldorf Walsh, the young violinist, was effective. The cornerstone ceremony was in front of the church. The stone before being placed in position, was suspended on the northeast corner of the structure. struc-ture. The cornerstone contained the following: An official document stating who was the reigning pontiff, and the P 1 w 'i tt r- 'f 1 . Kj names of the president of the United States, the bishop of tli2 diocese, the pastor of the church and the officiating prelate. There were also copies of the daily papers of Butte and specimens of all denominations of the coins of the country. Also in the cornerstone was placed a list of all subscribers to the church building fund. After the high mass and sermon an imposing processional of altar boys in white and the officiating priests, accompanied ac-companied by Bishop Keane, was taken up. The great throng followed to the street in front of the church and witnessed wit-nessed the ceremony of which the cornerstone cor-nerstone was " the central figure. The ceremony consisted of the blessing of the stone by the bishop, the chanting of the litany of the saints and closed with the depositing of the cornerstone in place. Father Callahan received many warm congratulations Sunday upon the splendid success of his efforts to secure se-cure a magnificent church edifice for the parish, which object and aim has now almost completely been realized. |
