Show THIRD CHOICE OF BISHOPS. Rt. Rev. Francis Bourne Will Succeed Suc-ceed Archbishop Vaughan. Rome, Aug. 24. The congregation of the propaganda met today under the direction of Cardinal Gotti. the prefect. After some discussion it was decided to propose to Pope Pius that he appoint the Rt. Rev. Francis Bourne, bishop of Southwark. England, as archbishop of Westminster, in succession to ' the late Archbishop Vaughan. Iondon. Aug. 24. The decision of the congr-egation of the propaganda to "propose "pro-pose to the pope the appointment of RiFTiop Bourne of Scothwark to the archbishopric of VTestminster somew hat surprised the English Roman Catholics. He was the third choice of the bishops who nominated him by a majority of only one vote. Sinre he became bishop , of Southwark, Mgr. Bourne had been energetic, but he was considered arbitrary. arbit-rary. especially in regard to the ;n-.incep ;n-.incep jn- nis vjiocese. On one oecvion he publicly declared ' that he was accountable ac-countable therefor "'only to God and the pope." |
