Show LATE IRISH NEWS (Dublin Freeman, Oct. 3.) Potato Disease In Kerry. The condition of the potato crop in the Bresna, Castleisland, and other East Kerry districts, is most unfavorable. unfavor-able. In a great many localities the crop has blackened and putrefied to such an extent as to cause considerable alarm amongst farmers. In fact, it is popularly apprehended that the yield from the crop this year will be the worst experienced since the memorable year of 1847. Owing to the Inclemency of the weather in the spring season, potatoes did not admit of being planted in due time, and the destructive frost which prevailed In the latter part of the month of May militated against th; I crop being fully developed when attacked at-tacked by the blight which manifested itself abnormally early, this year. The failure of the potato crop in those districts dis-tricts is a serious loss, as it constitutes the principal crop grown by the farmers farm-ers of this part of Kerry. Taking into consideration the bad harvest and unproductive un-productive yield from the crops farmers in this part of Ireland are placed in a most unenviable and adverse predicament, predica-ment, and the problem of obtaining the means wherewith to pay their rents, rates, and meet their domestic demands is one whjch they cannot easily solve under existing circumstances.. |
