Show CAPTURED JOHN MORGAN. Death Announed of Colonel R. T. Jacob. Louisville. Ky.. Sept. 13. Colonel R. T. Jacob, a picturesque figure during the civil war. died at his home here today, to-day, aged 78 years. Colonel Jacob was widely known as the man who .saved Kentucky from Fecession and v also as the. captor of General John Morgan. Colonel Jacob's career began with a trip across the plains in 1843. He crossed in time to join Fremont's command for service in the Mexican war. Returning Return-ing to Kentucky he was elected to the legislature as a Democrat. The secession seces-sion question came before the legislature legisla-ture and Colonel Jacob created surprise by refusing to vote with the Breckinridge Breckin-ridge party, his vote giving a plurality of one for the Unionists against secession. seces-sion. When active hostilities opened Colonel Jacob organized the Ninth Kentucky (Union) cavalry. He participated partici-pated in the smashing of Morgan's raid, and it was to Colonel Jacob and his command that the confederate leader and a number of his followers surrendered. surren-dered. Near the close of the war Colonel Colo-nel Jacob became lieutenant governer of Kentucky. Colonel Jacob's wife, Sarrah Benton, died many years ago. |
