Show Much space has of late been given by the Cath- j olic press to a discussion as to whether or not it is ' permissabie for a judge who is a Catholic, to grant , .'. - a divorce and whether a Catholic lawyer may bo j permitted to prosecute or. defend an action for di- f vorce in the civil courts. The gist of the matter 1 seems to be admirably disposed of in the following concise statement appearing in the Boston Pilot : f "Sabetti, a leading authority in moral theology, j declares expressly that it is lawful for Catholic : judges in America to grant divorces, because, in so ; I doing, they do not enter into the nature of the sac- ; rament of marriage, but merely assert that, as far as civil obligations Rre concerned, the marriage contract is no longer binding." . In. all such cases the conscience of a well instructed in-structed lawyer or judge will guide him in tho proper course to pursue. |
