Show CHURCH NOTES. 'Items of Interest in and About Ca-f Ca-f thedral Parish. Mrs. N. P. Dooly and Mrs. C. Schultz are the ladies appointed to attend to the altar this week. Services will be held at the penitentiary peniten-tiary next Sunday. Mass will be celebrated in Mercur next Sunday. Rev. Father Power was in the city for a few days last week. Father Power was returning from a visit to Aotre Dame, Ind to his home at Liv-ermore, Liv-ermore, Cal. The members oTthe Sodality of the Children of Mary received Holy Communion Com-munion In a body at the 9 o'clock Mass last Sunday. The regular monthly meeting was held at St. Mary's Academy Acad-emy in the afternoon. Miss Mamie I Farlinger will serve as president instead in-stead of Miss Mary Kinney, and Miss Nellie Mullen, as secretary instead of M:ss Adeline Du Chene until the next election, which will take place on Dec. S. Miss Kinney and Miss Du Chene were exemplary officers, and a source of much edification to the members of the Sodality. The rehearsal for the little children of the 9 o'clock choir is held every Saturday Sat-urday afternoon at 3 o'clock; at 4 o'clock, the young girls of the choir I practice until 5. On Sunday morning the young ladies practice at 9:30 until 10:15. Parents and guardians of the children are requested to send the children chil-dren to the rehearsals as regularly as possible. For the future the older girls will study quartette work . entirely. Their efforts at first may be a little crude, but the children will receive the same encouragement from the congregation congre-gation that they have in the past, for their work. Active work on the Christmas Christ-mas music will be done at every rehearsal re-hearsal beginning Saturday. Solemn Pontifical High Mass was celebrated last Saturday for the repose re-pose of the soul of the late Patrick Phelan. Rt. Rev. Bishop Scanlan was the celebrant, with Rev. Father Kiely deacon and Rev. Father Curran, sub-deacon. sub-deacon. The Gregorian Requiem was sang by the children's choir. Miss Ida Winn, contralto soloist, and the musical director of the "Diamond King" company, sang an "Ave Maria" by Nieolai at St. Mary's last Sunday. Miss Winn has a beautiful voice of good range. Owing to not being able to procure a copy of the music, she played her own accompaniment. It is needless to say that she was not impressed im-pressed with the beauty of the organ. When home. Miss Winn is the organist of St Patrick's church at Staten island. The members of the 11 o'clock choir 1 are preparing for Christmas the "Pro Pace" Mass by La Hache. For the Offertorv thp beautiful "Aocto Tr,-ii:.f will be rendered, and a double quartette quar-tette will sing the "Exulta Sion" by Victor Hammerel. More voices are sadly needed in the choir, particularly alto voices and one more soprano voice. At the last meeting of the Altar society so-ciety of St. Mary's Cathedral, plans for the decoration of the altar for Christmas Christ-mas were proposed by the president, Mrs. J. W. Farrell and were enthusiastically enthusi-astically discussed by the members present. The feast of St. Cecelia, the patron of music, will occur on Friday, Nov. 22. Christmas will occur on Wednesday this year. j The children and young ladies of the 9 o'clock choir were the guests of Rt Rev. Bishop Scanlan at his home last Saturday at an entertainment given by Bossert. the European impersonator. An excellent programme was given and every number was hugely enjoyed by an enthusiastic audience. Howard Butler,. But-ler,. Joseph McKay and Daniel Armstrong Arm-strong assisted Mr. Bossert with one number, impersonating three bad boys and they certainly acquitted themselves them-selves creditably. At the close of the entertainment the children tendered a vote of thanks to Pvt. Rev. Bishop for the pleasant afternoon. |
