Show The Tyranny of Fashion and It Votaries. Vo-taries. News comes to us from all parts of the country that the recent halt in the money world found a good many supposedly sup-posedly wealthy men, unable to keep up their expenses, obliged to dispose of their luxuries and live more simple life. These people were pleasure-crazy many of them, and with prosperity drove with a loose rein. There is one expense, ex-pense, however, that, like Banqtio's ghost "will not down." and that is the expense of the tyrant who rules the world of fashion. It is an open secret that very many men are working theni-selves theni-selves to nervous prostration to provide pro-vide a comfortable income for the needs of their families and to put away a little for a rainy day whose extrr.Ya-gant extrr.Ya-gant helpmates make progress impossible. impos-sible. These, unconscious of the sinfulness sin-fulness of their thriftliness. have acquired ac-quired the fashion habit with the unfortunate un-fortunate result that the rainy day reserve re-serve andflierhaps more, is flitted away in the follies of fashion. They have persuaded themselves that simplicity of dress and moderation in expense are co-ordinal offenses against prosperity. while lavishness of ornamentation and a display of wealth and virtues beyond other consideration. In our country s where everyone is supposed to think himself or herself as good as any other and where there is, at least, a pretended pretend-ed honor for class distinction, there is, on the part of the less wealthy, a radical rad-ical temptation to ape those who are of better mea.is. and to this unfortunate unfortu-nate tendency is attributable much of the discontent which produces family-troubles family-troubles and leads to the divorce court. Many families who have been extravagant extrava-gant livers while the money lasted, are now barely able to pay their simplest running expenses, and "my uncle" has been called upon to accept the family jewels for a loan to tide over the bad times. We have often remarked the simplicity and correctness of the Qua- 1 kcr dress it is in accordance with t;e tetachings of Christianity and we are persuaded that it has much to do with the family peace and general content with which these people are credited. Quakers are not caught with the hard times nur would others suffer so much if they would simplify their fashions and restrict their extravagances Catholic Cath-olic Advance. |
