' The Castltliar urban council has been threatened with a motion to quash the rate struck, by , the council, on the ground that the rate on land and other hereditaments is more than one-fourtlt of the rate on buildings. This is the second rate, struck by the council this year, the former rate having been declared de-clared illegal. On Monday an inquest was held at the Royal Victoria hospital, Belfast, by Dr. J. Graham, coroner, touching the death of William McCann, aged about CI years, who resided in the townland of Mealough, County Down, who was killed by being knocked down by a brake at Mealough. A verdict of accidental ac-cidental death was returned. A young man named Dan Doody, while engaged in making a "haystack at Abbeyfeale. fell from the stack and alighted on the up-turned pike he held in his hand, one prong of the pike entering en-tering behind the base of the head and passing through several inches beneath the skin upwards. Dr. Irwin dressed the wound, which is not considered serious. se-rious. In the recorder's court, Belfast, an inquest was held on- the. body .of Sarah Ann Kelly, aged 35 years, late of Coal-island, Coal-island, County Tyrone, whose body was found floating in the River Lagan at Queen's Quay, Belfast,- on -the 2d uit. Coroner WiiiianV Murphy, solicitor, held an inquest at the South infirmary, Cork, on Saturday into the circumstances circum-stances connected with the death of Mr. Lawrence Murphy, aged 50 years, an unmarried 'farmer,,, who recided at Cool-avalane, Cool-avalane, near Kinsalc,. and who died in the South infirmary this morning. Medical Med-ical evidence showed that death was due to shock, resulting from injury to the brain, . which might have been caused by deceased falling from a horse. The jury found a verdict in accordance ac-cordance with the medical testimony. Sir Arthur Vicars, the Ulsler King-at-Arms, accompanied by- Mr. Pierce Mahony of- Kilmona house. County Kerry, recently visited Brosna, in connection con-nection with the genealogical researches re-searches of the O'Mahony family, who were prominent in that part of Kerry upwards of 100 years ago. Both gentlemen gen-tlemen visited the Rev. Father Murphy, P.. P., and afterwards repaired to - the local graveyard, where they, endeavored to ascertain monumental inscriptions in reference to the O'Mahony family. On Tuesday, at Lalfcrrlggan sessions, Colonel Mercer, of the Third dragoon guards, stationed 'at Ballincolllg, was prosecuted by the Dublin county council coun-cil for contravention of the Epizootic Lymphangitis order during the recent cavalry maneuvers at Lusk. It appeared ap-peared that several horses suffered from the disease and were not reported. The magistrates dismissed the case on the ground that Colonel Mercer had no control over the hbrscs. I At Monaghan county council on Monday Mon-day a letter was read from the Castle-blayney Castle-blayney urban council intimating that , they adopted the small dwellings acquisition ac-quisition act, 1S99. and asking the council coun-cil to approve of it. Mr. O'Brien said that the Castleblayney urban council had Intended to put the act in force, and it appeared before they took further fur-ther steps It was necessary to have the approval of the county council, which was passed. Rev. J. P. Higgins. late manager of Monaghan technical college, col-lege, now' of the Christian Brothers' college. Cork, wrote resigning his membership mem-bership on the county agricultural committee com-mittee and other committees upon which he had been appointed, and thanking the members for their invariable inva-riable courtesy to him. The chairman and other members referred in eulogistic eulo-gistic terms to the many services rendered ren-dered by Brother Higgins in the cause of education in County Monaghan. Rev.
