It happened that Father MeCaba was stationed at the Australian prison as chaplain. To him O'Reilly confided) his intention cf making his escape. The priest offered to aid him. On a dark: night in 1S69 the two met by appointment, appoint-ment, and the priest and the prisoner exchanged clothes. In this disguise O'Reilly depart ed ini an coen boat witiiout food or drink. After three clays cf terrible exposura to the perils) of the sea, O'Reilly was picked-up by an American whaler and carried to Liverpool. Thence he made his way quickly to the United States. . The priest reported to the prison of- f ficials that he had been waylaid, by the convict, who compelled him t make the exchange of clothes. When the truth leaked out, later on. Father McCabe was obliged to make a hasty departure from Australia. He came to this country' and applied to Bishop Ireland Ire-land for a charge in this diocese about eighteen year ago.
