The slogan has gone forth "anybody but Peabody," and the boys claim to have the clans gathered for the -'ih of November with a vehemence that was j never known in the Cloud City before. It is well- Changes are good. The battle bat-tle of life is a hard one looking at it front mostly any standpoint, nd especially es-pecially the political. f- Last evening was an eventful one for the Knights' of Columbus. They gave a house warming in their new hall. There were about 400 invited guests', ladies and gentlemen. Silas Canheld, one of the charter - members of Hie Knights, did the honors, and did them well. In a neat little speech he announced an-nounced that the hall belonged to the Knights of Columbus, that it was paid for. and belonged ; exclusively, to this worthy order. This i? all true. After two years of (faithful work the knights 5wn their I own hall.' It is the first large and com-j com-j modious hall owned- by the Catholics j in Leadville; indeed, the first ow ned by the Catholics of the state. The even-j even-j ing was spent in a most entertaining manner. Songs, speeches and high-Ave w-ere the order, and everyone enjoyed the treat of the knights to his heart's content. Last Sunday the members of the children's sodality received holy communion com-munion in a body. Truly it was a beautiful beau-tiful sight to see over 300 children going to the altar at the 7 o'clock mass the fruitful, result of the Catholic school. - Mrs. Slavin died last week after a prolonged illness. Mr?. Slavin was the mother of eighteen children. Surrounded Surround-ed by gray-"haired sons and daughters she passed to the great beyond fortified forti-fied by the last sacraments of the church. , In fact, many of the old-timers are leaving the hills within the past two weeks. Today Mr. Elliott was? buried from the church. He was a most devout de-vout Catholic; he had the true, constant con-stant and firm faith, and had spent nearly a quarter of a century in Leadville. Lead-ville. During his last illness he suffered suf-fered much, but. like a true Christian bore it all with the greatest patience. The conference held two weeks ago by the clergy of this district. v:a? a decided de-cided success. The tract discussed was "Justice and Rights." Father Gibbons entertained the visiting clergy, and their visit. to these conferences always al-ways leave a happy memory. Rev. Father J. J. O'Reardon of Sil-verton Sil-verton has a new brick church almost completed. The people of Silverton are the best church workers in the state, and well deserve to leave behind them this monument of their faith and devotion. The Ladies' Altar and Rosary socioty together with the members of the Young Ladies' Sodality, will give a ball and entertainment early in November. -4 A reading circle is about to be formed among the Catholic young men and women. None except students will be, received. In our day there are too many of those would-be students joining join-ing societies. These -people never prepare pre-pare an article, never look at a book, have generally three or four old songs which they have sung since they were boys and girls, but never prepare anything any-thing new. They are. as the mountaineer mountain-eer puts it. good single-handed talkers talk-ers without any respect for words nr facts talk, talk, talk, and nothing more. TI ONE Eli. |
