Show I INFLUX OF IRISH LASSIES. The unusual influx of Irish immigrants during the last two months has puzzled the immigration authorities. It was generally expected that the reduced rate established by the various steamship lines in connection with the war between the Cu-nard Cu-nard and the Continental lines would increase the Irish immigration slightly, but no one expected such an unprecedented rush from the green isle. The Rev. Father Grogan, assistant to Father Henry, director of the Mission of Our Lady of the Rosary (the Irish Immigrant Girls' home), 7 State street, Xew York, returned recently from a few weeks' vacation in Ireland and reported an unusual un-usual degree of prosperity all through the island. He was astonished to learn that the months of July and August had recorded an unusual increase in the number of immigrants from Ireland arriving here. As a rule August and September are light months at the mission. It is a rare occasion when there are more than a half-dozen girls to be cared for on any one night during those months. When Father Grogan reported at the mission for duty he found that the home was crowded to its full capacity and that on Ellis island were nearly near-ly 1,000 Irish girls awaiting friends or the neccsr sary money to continue their journey to their destination. des-tination. L'pon looking over the house records, Father Grogan discovered that during the week that he had been on the way over more than 1,000 Irish immigrants had arrived at the port of Xew York, and that the mission had averaeed mor thnn fifty girls each night. Father Grogan says he cannot can-not account for this unprecedented exodus from Ireland under the existing prosperous condition of affairs. The immigration records show that in seven days nearly 1,500 Irish immigrants arrived at Ellis island. Of these nearly 70 per cent were girls and only a small percentage of the total were more than 23 years old. . A. |
