Show BAYONETS ARE TRUMPS IN COLORADO. ! There is right and wrong in the thoughts put into the minds of mankind; right ami wrong in the methods of putting the?.. thoughts into physical phy-sical action. This assumption does not establish the conclusion that when opposing forces come in collision, one must be right and the other wrong, for as a matter of fact both may be wrong. An example ex-ample of such character is furnished by Colorado today. A few of the members of the Western Federa tion of Minora have been arrested and imprisoned for incendiary acts and speeches. Greater offenses have been charged against them, such as destruction destruc-tion of mining property and threats of assassination. assassina-tion. Trial in a civil court in one instance resulted in their acquittal. But, for the sake of argument, argu-ment, we will assume that something mu,t have provoked all this excitement in Colorado, which would otherwise be peaceful did the miners continue con-tinue to work and refuse to obey the orders of their leaders to go on strike. Therefore, let that go into the count as wrong. Let us examine the other opposing force the state government. Courts arc established in every county for the administration of justice. Ample Queans arc furnished by the machinery of the law to arrest and punish criminals. .The militia of the state is at the disposal of the governor, whose beck and non sends soldiers to aid the civil authorities" unaoio to cope with not and rioters. Emphasis should be put. on the word "aid." The genius of our state constitution comprehended co-operation, not bupremacy of the military arm of the government. Therefore when military supremacy was established and the courts' mocked and defied, a grievous wrong was committed. ''Wrong" is a word too mild to apply ap-ply to 'the iniquity. It is treason to the state. Governor Peabody is responsible for that iniquity, along with his adjutant general, Sherman S. Bell. Only the other day this military satrap appeared before the court in response to a summons to answer an-swer for contempt. In an insolent tone he addressed ad-dressed the judge, saying that his presence must not be construed as an intention to obey the mandate man-date of the court, for it was riot his purpose to yield to civil law; that he simply called through courtesy. Could language be more treasonable in tone? Is ho a better citizen, nay, is he not a worse man than thc. poor, ignorant Italian miner guilty of sporadic attempts to violate the law? Dare we hope for respect and obedience to law among the masses when those sworn to execute it j are themselves the rapists of constitutional government? |
