Show SILVER JUBILEE Boise, Ida., April 4, 1910. Editor Intermountain Catholic: I take from the Sunday Boise Statesman a few interesting items regarding lit. Rev. Bishop Glorieux, Glo-rieux, who will celebrate his episcopal silver jubilee jubi-lee on the 19th of this month. To begin with, we congratulate the Statesman on the beautiful illustrations of the distinguished missionary mis-sionary prelate and all the church buildings, seven in number, erected by him in Boise. The Statesman gives this biographical sketch of the Bishop: Rt. Rev. A. J. Glorieux was boru iu Belgium February 1, 1844. He was educated at tho College of Courtrai from 1857 to 1S03; made his philosoph- j ical and theologicaL, courses at the American college, col-lege, Lourain, from 1SG3 to 1SG7; was ordained at Malines by his eminence, Cardinal Sterckx on August 17, 107, and left Belgium for Oregon, October Oc-tober 12, 18(37, and arrived in Portland on December Decem-ber 8, 1807. He had charge of the southern missions mis-sions of Oregon for two years; became rector of St. Paul French Prairie, the cradle of Christianity in the northwest, in 1S09; took charge of St. Michael's college at Portland on August 28. 1871, and remained re-mained in that position until appointed vicar apostolic apos-tolic of Idaho in 1884. He took part in the proceedings pro-ceedings of the third plenary council of Baltimore as bishop-elect. On the 3d of March, 188', he was formally elected titular bishop of Apolloma and vicar apostolic by His Holiness, Pope Leo XIII. His consecration took place April 19, 1 885, at the Baltimore cathedral, the officiating prelate being His Eminence, Cardinal Gibbons, assisted by Archbishop Arch-bishop Gross, who had but a few months previously been transferred from Savannah to Oregon City, and Bishop Maes of Covington, a classmate of Bishop Glorieux. When Bishop Glorieux took charge of the work in the territory, his diocese contained less than 2.000 souls; at the present time the Catholic population pop-ulation numbers 16,00(1, not including 1.100 Indians of the northern reservations. There has been a steady growth during the entire time of his pastorate pas-torate and at the present there are -tii church buildings, the handsome new cathedral at Boise in process of construction, 25 secular priests and 15 regular priests and 131 churches. Bishop Glorieux has not only attained high station sta-tion in his church, but ranks among the foremost men of temporal affairs, whose counsel is often sought in matters of general public interest and benefit to Idaho. Secular matters .involving the'" good of all the people hold important place in his heart and mind, and absorbing as are his apostolic duties, his highly prized judgment on material affairs af-fairs is always freely given to all of the many who seek it. While the jubilee will be held to celebrate the wonderful growth of his church in the state, it will be much in the nature of a personal ovation to the Bishop in which all Boise, irrespective of church affiliations, will join. , Assisting in the jubilee' celebration will le Archbishop Arch-bishop Christie of Portland, Bishop Q'Dea of Seattle, Se-attle, Bishop O'Reilly of Baker City and Bishop Carroll of Helena.
