Show BEING USEFUL. Down in Pennsylvania, in years gone by, several sev-eral bank cashiers went wrong aud got flight at it. After being duly tried and convicted they were sentenced to serve a term of imprisonment in the Western Pennsylvania penitentiary at Pittsburg, Here they entered into the work before them, each in his own way, and were undoubtedly model prisoners, pris-oners, as bank cashiers ought to be. This week, however, their peculiar abilities found room for exercise. ex-ercise. Suspicion had been aroused that the accounts ac-counts of the warden were not as straight as they should be, and the state authorities selected one of the men imprisoned for fixing up the bank books so they looked all right, but were all wrong, to look over the books and accounts of the warden. It required re-quired only a short time for the ex-cashier to find a discrepancy of several thousand dollars in the accounts, ami lie called the other experts in the penitentiary to verify his discovery. And now the warden will try to explain, as the gentlemen in his charge tried to explain before him. Of course, there is the prospect that he can do so, but the evidence presented by the convicts and the books, according to the press reports, seems to be so conclusive that he will have a hard job doing so. Thus even overworked bank cashiers may serve a useful purpose while serving the state in one of its penal institutions. |
