Show INSULT TO CATHOLICS. The Saturday Evening Post is endeavoring to increase its circulation in Detroit, and it may be presumed that its agents solicit Catholics to. subscribe sub-scribe for the publication. In a recent issue of the Philadelphia enterprise there appeared the following follow-ing slander of Catholicity; an insult-especially directed di-rected at Irish Catholics. The slander is written under the heading, "An Inspiration from Casey." Here it is: "The women of the church in a suburb in Chicago were soliciting money to pay for redecorating their house of worship. They were told, diplomatically, that if they would call on Casey, who kept the leading lead-ing saloon of the village, they might get a good donation. do-nation. They called. Casey met them genially, listened to what they had to say, and promptly subscribed sub-scribed five hundred dollars. This was so much more than the solicitors had hoped for that they were much flustered and could do nothing but stammer stam-mer their thanks. Finally one of them rounded to and said: "'Why, Mr. Casey, this is most generous of you; it will allow us to get what we want very much a fine stained glass window.' "Casey thought that would be the right thing to do. " 'And, Mr. Casey,' said the spokeswoman, 'in view of this magnificent donation, isn't there something you would like put on the window, some sentiment or some remembrance, or something of the kind V " 'Well,' said Casey, 'I think it would Ink foiue to have on the glass, bechune th' two parts av it. in nate letthers. something loike this "After Mass Vkit Casey's." ' " How do Irish Catholics, all Catholics, like the above burlesque of their faith published in the columns col-umns of a weekly sheet that endeavors to proclaim itself free from all insult to creed or race? If the editor of the Saturday evening Post and its proprietorship desire to increase circulation among Cathalics the would-lx: humorist who wrote "An Inspiration In-spiration from Casey" should be given his or her quietus from the pay roll. Humor is all right, but when it descends to slander, then it is disgusting and worthy of contempt. Michigan Catholic. |
