The gift came entirely unsolicited, and was all the more welcome from being be-ing unexpected. It was finally decided upon Friday of last week when Miss O'Meara called at the residence of Rt. Rev. Bishop Scanlan and informed him of her intention. The bishop has been given carte blanc up to J12.000, and designs de-signs will be asked for at once from the American agents of the Carrara Marble j company, the headquarters of which J are in Italy. When the choice of a design de-sign is made the order will be immediately immedi-ately placed, although it may be six months before the altar is finished and j in- its place h; the cathedral. j The gift is in memory of Miss O'Meara's dead pare.its. the family having hav-ing been members of the congregation for years.' While nothing definite has been decided upon as yet. the altar will be the main or high altar of the church, and may reach a height of thirty" feet to the top of the spire. In viewv)f the fact that practically the entire amount of the gift may be expended on the purchase, such works of art when not for sale entering the country free of duty. Bishop Scanlan is of the opinion that the altar will be one of the finest in the country. The O'Meara family is well known in Salt Lake, although the remaining members. Miss Frances and Messrs. William and Michael, now make their home for the most-part in Tonopah, New. where the brothers are-extensive-ly interested hi mining notably in the Alpine mine in the Silver Peak district. Both Bishop Scanlan and Vicar General Gen-eral Kiely are particularly doiigMed with the gift, because of the open-hearted and unsolicited manner of the giving. |
