Show A SPLENDID ACHIEVEMENT. (From the Salt Lake Herald.) St. Mary's cathedral, the new Catholic Catho-lic edifice whose cornerstone was consecrated con-secrated yesterday by Archbishop Riordan, Rior-dan, is a magnificent monument to the religious zeal of the Catholics of this region. With Bishop Scanlan, their able, efficient head, they have long looked forward to the day when their faith should have a temple of worship j commensurate with the importance of the organization here. Their hopes are i to be realized, and yesterday's exercises 1 I mark: the first step toward that achievement. This realization of a great purpose has been accomplished so quietly, with so little flourish of trumpets that few people, outside those directly interested, realize the importance of the task so happily approaching completon. The new cathedral, when finished, will be one of the finest architectural designs in the country, it will be the most imposing im-posing church edifice. in the intermoun-tain intermoun-tain region, and it will be the center of Catholic activity in a vast territory. Credit for the success of this undertaking under-taking is largely due to Bishop Scanlan,- whose ' piety, broad liberality of spirit and wisdom in administration. have endeared him. not only to the communicants of his own faith, but to every one who knows him or knows of J him. Bishop Scanlan is most fortu- f nate in having wealthy parishioners f who recognized their religious obliga- ; tions and have contributed generously ,' from their wealth to the cathedral j fund. Nor should it be forgotten that the Catholics of smaller means have i done their full share toward this f crowning effort of the church in Sail Lake- , . i The Herald joins a host of well-wish-, ers in congratulating Bishop Scanlan , and his Deople on this added evldencp, : |
