Show j DURANG0, COLO. i This morning with the opening of the Lenten season St. Columba's church witnessed a solemn and interesting ceremony cer-emony w hen ail of the children over ten years of age made a vow to abstain from all Intoxicating liquors until they have completed their twenty-first year. Father Callanan in a short instruction congratulated the children and parents on the event which would be one of the pleasing landmarks in their life. After speaking on the evils of drunkenness, and the extreme difficulty of reforming a victim of the drink habit, he dwelt on the fact that so many of the worst evils arising from drink take. their root in early youth, and that those who ar rive at manhood's estate without having known the taste of intoxicating liquors generally remain temperate for the rest of their lives. The children listened attentively at-tentively and then, kneeling down with their right hands raised aloft, repeated aloud and with evident enthusiasm the solemn words of the pledge. This ceremony cere-mony will be renewed occasionally as tiie children reach their tenth year until un-til in course of time one of the largest total abstinence soe'eties in the stalt will be attached to St. Columba's church. A new circulating library of the most select juvenile works has recently been purchased for the members of the league. Durango Herald. |
