The promoters of the Sacred Heart j League will hold the regular monthly J meeting on Sunday at 3 o'clock, Friday. J August 3. will be communion day for the league members, j Tuesday. August 15. will be Catholic i state day at Saltair. Excursions will j lo run from the adjoining states, cities and towns. The excursion will be j under the management of the ladies of i St. Mary's Cathedral Alter Society and j a royally good time is anticipated". All 1 the Catholics of the city are urged to I take an interest in the affair so as to j make it a financial success. f ' Comparisons are odious and ahvays j bad form, but it is difficult to refrain i from complimenting Mrs. Joseph Deder- I iehs, president of the Altar -Society. lor her excellent work since elected to !the office. She is without doubt one of the most energetic, enterprising little women that ever presided over the society. so-ciety. Her interest in the work brings back memories of the early days at the ' '3 cathedral, when Mrs. Salisbury, Mrs. j McCormick. Mrs. Burke. Mrs. Smedlev, j i tbe late Mrs. Thomas Marshall and , f many others were officers of the society, 3 f and to use a slang expression "things L : did hum." under those clever women. 1 Success to the organization now. and S deep appreciation for Mrs. Dederichs 1 j and her able assistants. ' :; ' " '' Two of the four gargoyles that are 1 to ornament the front tower of the new cathedral now nearing completion, I have received the last touches of the sculptor. These were recently inspected in-spected by a knot of small boys who, j to the pride and admiration of Sculptor I E. C. Strobel. pronounced them "the ugliest looking animals they ever saw." ; . These fanciful or grotesque animals s were very commonly used in mideval I times in large cathedrals and castles, j They project outside the main build- ing. their main purpose' being to carry I water from the gutter of the building clear of all the walls." . ! . -- l In the list of those who contributed to the lunch for the choir and orphan- i age picnic held at Saltair last week, t the names of Mrs. C. A. Quigley and I Mrs. F. O. Horn were inadvertently ! omitted.
