Show SPOKANE, WASH. f i ! (Special Correspondence.) Rector's feast clay, in honor of Rev. Herman J. Goller. S. J., president, was celebrated at Gonzaga. college Sunday, April 14, when, at 7 o'clock in the morning, a choir composed of senior and junior students sung a mass composed com-posed for the occasion by Professor Frederick Feurbach, teacher of piano. The services were conducted in the boys' chapel, and parents and friends of the students were in attendance. There- was a banquet for the faculty and boarding students at noon. President Presi-dent Goller accupied the seat of honor. In the evening the three-act drama. "More Sinned Against Than Sinning," was presented by the dramatic section in college hall, which was thronged by parents of the students and invited guests. Preparations are already under way for the commencement exercises at Gonzaga college in June, where a large class will be graduated. W. B. McFar- land of Coeur d Alene. Ida., has been chosen valedictorian. Desmond J. O'Neill of Glendive, Mont . will present an essay on "Dante's Divine Comedy." ; William O'Shca of Spokane is to speak on "When Is a Strike Allowed to be De- , clared?" and Stanley J. Padden of Se- atttle will discuss the subject "How a ' Strike Should Be Carried On and Set- tied." The college will secure a speak- , er of note to address the graduating class. ' Frank A. Garracht. an attorney of '" Walla Walla. Wash., who was the chief , speaker at the open meeting of the Young Men's Institute of Spokane, in Oliver hall, a few evenings ago, recommended recom-mended a plan for the confederation of Catholic clubs. He spoke of the value . of tire organizations and endorsed their aims and objects. Rev. H. J. Goller. president of Gonzaga college, made a plea to the young men to join the organization, or-ganization, and Father Fitzgerald of the Church of O'": f.ady of Lourdes. formerly a meinbe; i . the organization, spoke briefly along the same line. He will be admitted as an honorary member, mem-ber, as will all the Catholic clergy- of the city. Mayor Daggett in a few remarks re-marks to the benefit of fraternalism, and W. T. Donovan and Father Piper each made remarks. Those contributing contribut-ing to the program were Hugo Wender, Professor F. Fuerbach, Menenger brothers. Thomas Finnegan and Thomas Thom-as O'Brien Ladies will be admitted at the monthly meeting in May. The Young Ladies' Sodality of St. Aloysius' church gave a successful card parly in the gymnasium of Gonzaga college recently. One hundred and seventy sev-enty persons attended and spent an enjoyable en-joyable evening. Ladies' first prize was won by Miss Margaret Burns, and gentlemen's first prize by E. P. Randall. The committee were Miss Julia VVatch-! VVatch-! ler, Miss Agnes Quinn. Miss Frances Dorsey, Miss Minnie Llewellyn, Miss Antoinette Liendecker and Miss Catherine Cath-erine Sholderer. j |
