"The Catholic Church as Viewed by an Outsider" Out-sider" was il.e subject of a sermon recently at the Tabernacle Presbyterian, church Philadelphia, Pa., by the Ik-v. Dr. William Henry Ox toby. Dr. Oxtoby's sermon was an appreciation of the Catholic Church. He said in part "There are many strong points about this Church. 1 believe confession to be beneficial, and that the prayers to the Virgin have brought many women under religious influence. Fifty-four of our hymns were written by Catholics, of which Ihere are lO.OOU.OOO (official Catholic Diroetorv says 1 :.', ;r.l. 04-! Ed. C. S. and T.) out of :M,OW,000 ehurch people in the United States. Their missionary mis-sionary activities have covered the earth. They have always been first in establishing hospitals. "The Catholics are really more orthodox from our point of view than many denominations we affiliate af-filiate with. Protestants and Catholics alike recite the Apostles' Creed. The definitions of the Councils Coun-cils of Xice and Chalcedon on the Trinity and on the person of Christ form part of the theology of both Catholic ami Protestants. The personality of God. His providential dealings with man reve-lat reve-lat ion through Scripture, man a sinner and Christ a Savior, all of these are held by all Christians alike. In Uieir view of Christ and in Iheir doctrine doc-trine of future rewards and punishments, the Catholics Cath-olics are more in harmony with Evangelical Protestants Prot-estants than some Protestant denominations are." |
