Show Erin's Language Week Was a Great Success. J Dublin, Oct. 6. Ireland has been hav ing her "language week," and it. has been a huge success. The unregenerate ; ' may be inclined to be facetious, and say ! that where it is a question of language Irishmen are not likely to be wanting, but the language in this case is the Gae- lie, which fewer Irish men and -women i speak than the Gaelic league thinks I ought to do so. The league is certainly f doing its best to remedy that state of af- i fairs and has greatly interested the i ! Irish people in their own language, his- f ! ' tory and literature. I There was an immense demonstration I in Dublin Sept. IS under the auspices j of the league, because the study of J Irish in the new National University I has not been adequately provided for. ? The recognition given to the Irish lan guage these last few years means that it has been removed, from the category of proscribed studies. Irish history is, however, still taught only in a mutilated muti-lated form in the schools, where anything any-thing that reflects on England's rule, or indeed anything political.- is strictly prohibited. |
