Show MEDICINES. j Doctors disagree, and sometimes the patient re- I covers, and sometimes he doesn't. A physician of the highest repute once told U3 that no doctor could use more than a half a dozen remedies in his practice prac-tice and be successful. Further than this, he insisted in-sisted that a large per cent of his patients got along admirably when they followed his directions as to diet and exercise if he gave them some innocent potion to take at regular intervals. Especially was this true among those who sought his advice when j they only "thought" they were ill. However, when we "think" we are ill, our first call for assistance ( is from the doctor, upon whose broad shoulders we shift the responsibility to "pull us through." So far he has been successful, and we may be pardoned the hope that his success may be continued for many years to come. If a physician of the highest repute can use - only half a dozen remedies in his practice, remedies reme-dies the effects of which upon the human body have been observed for many years, the absurdity i of the layman attempting to doctor himself from formulas handed out gratis in the form of "pure readers" in the newspapers is at once apparent. The public should be warned against this new fraud. The advertisements are cunningly devised and de- ceive. You can get the remedies at any well- i stocked drug store and mix them at home. Usual- ' ly there are several ingredients. To cure a cold you go to your druggist and get a pint of good, pure whiskey (the spelling of whisky in the advertisement adver-tisement is sufficient evidence of its being an advertisement), ad-vertisement), add so much glycerine and so much "bogus" compound. The "bogus" compound may be only powdered rock candy, but in the original package (and be sure the package is unbroken), the innocent purchaser pays about 25 cent3 an ounce for it. Then there are remedies for stomach troubles, kidney troubles, and about every ill under the sun, which the prescription given will cure. According to the advertisements they are ; old standard remedies. According to our physician ri and our druggist they are all frauds. |
