Show CONTEMPTIBLE BIGOTRY. I Our in California they have collected I funds for a White memorial. Senator White was a Catholic. Citizens of all creeds and of no creed subscribed for the proposed statue. The monument was to be set up on tha court house grounds at Los Angeles. But the board of supervisors of that city, by a two-thirds two-thirds vote, refused to allow the memorial me-morial to be erected in that place. Bigotry did it. "Prejudice against the religious faith of the late senator blotted blot-ted out in the narrow minds of these creatures the manifold claims of hi3 memory upon the veneration and respect re-spect of all "classes in the commonwealth, common-wealth, and rendered them forgetful of the honor and dignity of the commonwealth common-wealth itself." One redeeming feature is to be found in the fact that the press of Los Angeles, irrespective of political color and religious bias, condemns con-demns the narrowness of the board of supervisors. "With one voice the papers, pa-pers, in the name of public decency, enlightenment and fair play, repudiated repudi-ated the motives actuating the majority major-ity of the board." All this in the year of grace one thousand nineteen hun-t dred and one. |
