Show DEATH OF FAMOUS EDUCATOR AND EDITOR. Dr. Michael Walsh, a distinguished Catholic educator and editor, died last Thursday at his home. 200 Xincty-second street, Brooklyn. He was 17 yt ars old. He was horn in Kilkenny, Ireland, and after having been graduated from St. Kieran's College, he entered Maynooth in 1853. He remained at tlio university eight years and was first honor man iu all his classes, a unique record, though he was never ordained. For several years thereafter he was a professor in Carlow College. " He came to Xew York- in 1SGG, and established St. Stephen's Latin school in Father McGlynn's parish. Dr. Walsh became a special writer for several Xew York newspapers in 18GS. In 1873 he was made editor of the Sunday Democrat. A few years afterward he became its proprietor. In 18S9 he founded the Catholic Herald. He retired eight years ago from the management manage-ment of the Sunday Democrat and the editorship of the Catholic Herald. In his later years Dr. Walsh devoted himself to the editing of matter for a Catholic publishing house. He had lived at Fort Hamilton for thirty years. In March, 1905, he received from Pope Pius X a portrait of his Holiness appropriately decorated deco-rated and inscribed, and bearing the apostolic benediction ben-ediction in official text. |
