Show THE BOARD ON GEOGRAPHIC NAMES. Hy nuthorlty of nn executive order, Issued by Ttcsldeiu Harrison on September Sep-tember 4, 1900, there exists In Washington Washing-ton a body of amlible gentlemen known as the Hoard on Geographic Names The functions of thnt body were understood under-stood to be the ascertainment of the proper spelling of geographical naipea, especijlly of those In the United States, and of endeavoring therefrom to hate etery body spell the names cotrecily nnd with uniformity This ttns no doubt th procedure, to some exlent at least, In tho early work of the Hoard Hut It has fallen jnto evil ways Instead of making efforts to find the true spelling of names, It hi dtlfted Into the notion of adopting nrhltrary and freak spellings spell-ings of lis own, for which thcie Is no nuthorlty whateter. Instances of this nre seen In ninny placee. There are some In Utah. Two affect the names of counties This Hoard changes th" proper nnd legal fom of Hox Hlder county to Boxelder nnd of L'lntah to Uinta In both of these enses the Hoard Is absolutely nnd necesmully wrong These counties nre the creation ot law They were rrented by stndKo, nnd tho fotm of the name given In the statute e reallng them Is the only form that It la proper to use 'lhe form first git en (o these names by the statute Is the form tint has been uniformly followed ever since. It Is the form fixed In tho Constitution Con-stitution of tho State. It Is Impossible that any board or person could hate nny power to change It, save and except the prop"r legal nuthmlty of this Slnte The attention of the Hoard Ins ben quietly called (n this matter with no sImi of nny correction It is therefore proper to make this explanation publicly, pub-licly, and to say thnt the Hoard Is not performing pioperly the (unctions of such ft Hoard hut Is attempting lo set up nrhlliury nnd erioneous foims of Its own, vtjitch oufcht not to he followed, and which every one who eloes follow commits a mistake. It Is unfortunate tint the Hnatd has depailed from truo standards, for It was hoped that Its conclusions might carry authority, as It Is, where theie Is dlterse spelling the dictum of the Hoard merely puts one on Inquiry |
