Show OLD MAN WINTER ADDS MANY NEW HAZARDS TO ROADS "Traffic accidents will probably Involve numerous cars during the next few weeks if the thermometer hangs low unless every' driver takes steps to guard against the sleet and ice conditions now prevailing." This was the warning of J. L. Bal-derston, Bal-derston, Idaho Law Enforcement Commissioner, referring to the cold wave which recently swept over the state. He added this advice; ad-vice; "Any owner who knows his cat is not fully prepared to meet winter win-ter hazards should have the good sense and decency not to drive while roads are extremely slippery. That means any owner who is not sure of his brakes being equalized should have them tested immediately immedi-ately and his tire chairs put on while ice and snow conditions exist. ex-ist. Loss of traction and skidding are the main causes of the big increase in-crease in winter accidents according accord-ing to the National Safety Council research. "There is another precaution, almost al-most equally as important as tire chains and good brakes in slippery slip-pery weather," Mr. Balderston continued, con-tinued, "Poor vision is the most important cause of winter accidents acci-dents next to skidding. "Headlights, wjndshied wipers and defrosters should be tested and weak or defective ones replaced. There is no excuse for 'One-eyed cars cars with one dead headlight. head-light. These hazards are always dangerous but more so when the icy condition of streets and highways high-ways make it difficult to turn out to avoid hitting another vehicle." |
