Show GOV JOHN R TANNER AND THE NEGRO MINERS FOR foil some time put past several of the large coal mining min ing operators of virden and other points in illinois have had trouble with their miners who finally struck or quit the employment of their employers then the owners of several of the large mines mines decided to employ negroes and on Wednesday Oct when the train stopped at virden it had negroes on board who had been engaged to work for the chicago virden coal company but just as aa they were ready to alight from the cars they were fired into by the striking miners and the result is that eight or ten white miners are dead aad a number seriously wounded and it is difficult to estimate the number of negroes killed or wounded by the strikers C W loucks president of the chicago and virden coal co had prior to the arrival of the negro miners appealed to gov tanner to P protect protect his company to empl employ ay whomsoever it chose but the governor responded that he did not propose to render military assistance si in protecting the colored ex convicts and scalawags scala wags of alabama whom the company had brought into illinois president loucks claims that gov tanner is i s responsible for the actions of the striking miners and he intends to prosecute all to the bitter en end d including the governor for he maintains that governor tanner has no right to refer to the colored pop population U of this country as ex CO convicts evicts and scalawags scala wags every negro throughout the land ought to commend the action of president loucks for he is is a true friend of the negro race john R tanner was ele elected acted governor of illinois in 1896 and it is safe to say that because he is a republican he received the bulk of the negro negra vote and the hon edward H morris of chicago and many other would be leaders of our race were horrified to MC ascertain ertain that some of the negroes of that state favored the reelection election re of the hon john P altgeld who proved himself a far better friend to the negro than the pwe present t governor of illinois |
