| Show Silver Reef Pioneer Goes Beyond OJ Many of the older people of Cedar City and Iron County will remember an bId pioneer Silver SlIver Reefer by the name of Wm D D. D Newman and will regret his passing which Monday January 3rd The deceased first introduction to the western part of the United States was in 1849 at the time of the gold excitement in California He lIe left his home in Indiana for the Eldorado going by way of Cape Horn up the South American and Mexican coast to California I Here he suc successfully pursued the infatuated game of gathering gold for a few years cars gathering quite a sum of mo money ey by so doing He then went back to Indiana married married married mar mar- ried and decided to come to Utah and join in in the mining game for precious metals He came overland in 1851 arriving in Silver Reef the same year and was there during the Reefs Reef's boom days and hung on after the boom and until his II death He lIe was successful in the Reef as a contractor of wood and a lessee of several mines which netted him considerable con conk money and on which he has lived since since he became incapacitated for work the past few years The money he accumulated during the Reef boom days lasted him until his death with enough left to lay him away in fitting manner He was an outstanding man honest and upright a a man whom everybody liked and one who always had a warm spot for any unfortunate and never was there anyone anyone ever turned fro from door I Lt |
