Show LIVESTOCK I By Dy DR DU HUGH HURST Tooele County Agent Beef Cattle The agricultural possibilities of the county are numerous and varied They include cattle both beef and dairy sheep both farm flocks and range small grains horses and potatoes The beef cattle are rather numerous and are fair to good in quality showIng showing show- show Ing Ine a predominance of Shorthorn and ana Hereford breeding While we recognize recognize recognize nize that there is room for much improvement improvement im improvement im- im provement that may be brought about systematic culling and through a more grading of stock yet they are above the average cattle of the state in Ity Tooele county boasts of one of the best herds of Shorthorns of the state though they are comparatively even few In number Photograph No 1 shows Barron Barren with a of his get on the farm of R. C Russell of St. St John who markets whole milk in n Tintic Sheep While sheep has always held one of the moat most important phases hases of agriculture agriculture agriculture agri agri- culture of the county since the beginning beginning beginning begin begin- ning of its settled history the lack of summer range has placed a permanent permanent permanent perma perma- nent and serious handicap on the wen west westside westside t side of the county Because of arid condition of the state the range sheep p will always occupy an important position position po po- sitio in our sheep industry but th the e growing importance and popularity o othe of f the farm flock has recently eaten in inroads inroads inroads in- in I roads into the sheep industry of the county Hampshire sheep purchased from the famous herd of Sons Suns owned by the Grantsville Sheep club are giving a very good account o 01 of their breeding and care The following following follow follow- j ing are photographs of spring lambs that show type quality substance care and imd breeding Horses While the horse situation has been bee badly neglected to the sorrow am and misfortune of the people we still have havea a few farmers who have not lost their balance in favor of mechanical pow pow- er There are arc at least six good stallions stallions stal stal- lions of the draft breeds owned in the various communities of the county The farmers are arc again taking hold o othe of the situation and are breeding an in increased increased increased in- in creased number of mares this season The saddle loving people especially those who are lare are fond of saddle sports will be happy to learn that there i is increased interest in the breeding 6 bf saddle horses There is one of the government remount horses standing in the county and will be bo utilized to tc his fullest capacity this season The same stallion was used in the county I last ast season and some good colts produced produced produced pro pro- though not as many as we would have liked Mares of the type and quality shown in the following cut when mated to one of the remount stallions should produce horses that would please any saddle lover Hogs The hogs of the county are not particularly par par- numerous yet most of the better setter class of farmers produce butcher butch butch- er and pickle enough first class hams and bacon to supply their home re reo There is a sprinkling of the various vanous breeds of lard type hogs owned in inthe inthe inthe the various settlements of the county This phase of agriculture will be stimulated because there is an abundance of good pasture byproducts from the home manufacture of butter and skim skin milk and any quantity of grain alof all al of which are vital to the production of good pork The people generally are s seeing the necessity of carrying on a more nearly balanced type o of f agriculture and consequently are adding add add- ing hog more and better animals and preparing preparing pre pre- paring to take better care of them Small GraIns It has been recognized for man many y years that Tooele land was very fertile fertile fer fer- fer tile and produced abundantly of th the various crops yet in 1925 she wa was s thrown into the front rank rani for th the e production of the best wheat sho shoat shown wn at the State Fair The prize winnin winning g grain was produced by R. R N N. N Bush o on n Clover creek under the following cu eul cuI Land plowed in summer an and early fall and seeded with y ted Red forty-five forty pounds per acre i ir n I the le fore part of November 1924 There here was very slight germination before the ground froze up that fall probably the majority of the seedlings seedlings seed- seed lings ings winter killed The grain came up p well in the spring of 1925 and grew rapidly When When the ground ground was dry ry enough after the winter snow had melted off and the grain was up the field eld was gone over with the packer ocker which pulverized the few clods lods left after the winter effect of freezing and thawing and left a fine mulch on the ground Samples of this grain won first and second prizes and sweepstakes in open competition at the State Fair Besides wheat of the various varieties varieties vari- vari ties oats barley and rye produce abundantly Potatoes In years gone gone by City has produced the champion potatoes of oi the he state but more interesting at the S t t F i r y d rM r rs SOME OF TOOELE COUNTY'S PUREBREDS resent present time is the possibilities brought brought rought out recently in the southern part art of the county for the production of if certified seed potatoes They grow Early Blue Victors Idaho Yields of four hundred hundred hun- hun dred Ired to five hundred bushels per acre are common and usually they run considerable higher than that Sugar beets do very well yielding up to thirty tons per acre but unfortunately unfortunately some of the best sugar beet areas are so far from the railroad beet production is not practical Fruits and vegetables have always done lone well in Tooele valley wherever water is available Berries in particular particular particular par par- yield abundantly the quality of which is unsurpassed The one thing we need most is an increase of population to help develop devel devel- op our vast areas of fertile land and underground water which is abundant abundant ant particularly in the southern porion portion portion por- por tion ion of the county Too many of If us are land poor and consequently are standing in the way of our own development |
