Southern Utah there I is a district now comparatively unknown unknown un un- I known surpassing all others in the United States in scenic beauty and and geologic interest I This district contains three of the nations nation's outstanding show places I Zion ion National Park Cedar Breaks and andi i Bryce ryce Canyon When provided with adequate hotel and nd lodge facilities safe highways and nd comfortable transportation this district strict will become a great national I recreation center and will prove to be beof beof of f immense value to the State of of I Utah I The Union Pacific System having an n in these second only to that of the nation and I the IB state has expended d during dIning 1923 and nd 1924 the sum of for or improvements as follows I 1 The construction of 33 miles of railroad from Lund to Cedar City in in- eluding luding miscellaneous fa facilities facilities' c i 11 t tie i o s e I 2 Construction of a modern modem passenger pas pas- enger station also freight depot and other ther facilities at Cedar City I 3 Purchase completion and equipment of hotel lEI El El El Escalante alanto at Cedar City i ii i 4 The installation of a water system tem em at Bryce with its surroundings that it appears to have grown among the trees find and locks rocks It contains a n lounge ladies adies rest room dining room that will accommodate date guests at table modern kitchen and store rooms shower baths wash rooms etc The lodges constructed of sawed lumber afford sleeping accommodations Hons for four or six people accord according in to the manner in which guests may may wish to be accommodated In each of the two rooms there are two single beds or one double Led bedr trunk stand dressing table rugs comfortable chairs chail's and a stove These accommodations will provide for a total of 18 guests To provide a dependable supply of good water not only for our guests but for tor tourists traveling in their own conveyances and stopping at the public camp ground a supply of pure cold spring water has been brought six inch iron distance distance distance dis dis- through a pipe a tance of six miles to an enclosed conCrete concrete concrete con con- crete storage reservoir lr from which the water is piped to the lodge center and public camp ground A store or commissary will be maintained maintained main main- for the convenience of ot the traveler where food and other supplies supplies sup plies automobile accessories and gasoline gas oline may be purchased at reasonable prices With respect to the improvement at Zion National Park The lodge center to be constructed of stone and sawed lumber will harmonize harmonize harmonize har har- monize with the surroundings and will wilt provide accommodations similar to those in the lodge center at Bryce Canyon The lodges lodge to bo be constructed of sawed lumber will be of ot the same v type type and afford the same accommodations ao no at Bryce Canyon and will ill provide percent percent cent of ot the visitors travel by rail For example while persons visited visited visited visit visit- ed Yellowstone National Park during the 1924 season of 72 per percent percent percent cent traveled by means other than I rail principally in private conveyances convey convey- lances ances while or 23 percent traveled by rail Notwithstanding tha that this same condition con con- will undoubtedly prevail Inthis in inthis inthis this new Southern Utah district the I Union Pacific System will in connection tion with its undertaking to develop j i the the- the district highway is the highway through Red Red Canyon on on the route from Cedar City to Bryce Canyon completed during the year 1924 1 by the Forest Service The Federal Government through its of Bureau of Public Roads Forest Service and National Park Service the State of Utah also aho several counties counties coun coun- ties thereof interested in this project have during the past two years re responded responded responded re- re well to the th-e necessities of the situation and have been building and improving 1 the he highways but the work is far from complete It is felt however that with the Improvements already accomplished those now in and those promised for the early part of next year stages auto-stages may be operated between Cedar City and Zion National Park also between Cedar C City ty and Bryce Canyon during the summer of 1925 with re reasonable sare safety if great care is exercised There are four classes of highways involved State National Forest National National
