Show "SAFETY" STARTS IN SCHOOLS. Developing intelligent citizens through safety education and teaching teach-ing accident prevention as a means of promoting interest, in workmen's compensation anil other related problems, prob-lems, is advocated by L. T. Tustin, Supervisor of Rural Schools in the state of West Virginia. He points out that a cautious man or woman is seldom sel-dom injured except through momentary momen-tary lack of concentration of thought, or through the unexpected presence of an unusual circumstance whose consequence cannot he avoided. Mr. Tustin cites the appalling growth of the automobile death rate and says; "It is clear to me that there is need of some consistent effort to reduce re-duce the number of public, accidents. It also appears clear that if the school can do something to this end, it. is wholly justified in including in its curriculum instruction designed to decrease the constantly growing number of accidents and deaths. "The progressive teacher will experience ex-perience new means of making her schoolroom a living, active world, in which the children acquire the experiences ex-periences of life through living; in which these experiences will be organized or-ganized for the control of situations outside the schoolroom, that the children will face in their later lives." It is interesting to note, in this connection, that the National Bureau of Casualty and Surety Underwriters has for some years been pioneering the itlea of teaching accident prevention preven-tion in the schools, knowing that a child who has been taught the principles prin-ciples of safety will he a more careful care-ful adult. That this work has been beenficial is evidenced by statistics which show that the accident rate for school children has been improved in the-face of increases for the public at large. |
